We are looking for professionals with hydraulic engineering interest, who can support the Virginia Department of Transportation in hydrology, hydraulic design, stormwater management and erosion control design to keep Virginia safe and moving!


Job Duties


VDOT's Lynchburg District is seeking a District Hydraulic Engineer (PE) to supervise and train professional engineering and technical staff. Plan, develop, coordinate and monitor activities of engineers responsible for the technical review, analyses and approval of engineering activities. Lead projects across functional areas of the department. Provide project management and leadership to include planning, supervising, organizing, monitoring and directing work activities of staff and resources. Coordinate activities with management, stakeholders, customers, and key individuals throughout VDOT. Communicate with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, citizens and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs.

The District Hydraulic Engineer (PE) will manage roadway and transportation related design projects with a specific focus. Oversee hydraulics related issues complying with applicable processes, schedules, budgets, design criteria, standards and specifications. Provide technical support to others in hydrology, hydraulic design, stormwater management and erosion control design. Supervise and train staff.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.

  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include engineering design and analysis tools.

  • Progressively responsible engineering experience investigating and resolving design issues and managing multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Valid Professional Engineer's license.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Experience with roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and materials.

  • Civil Engineering experience related to hydraulic and roadway design and standard design technical knowledge.


  • Knowledge of VDOT drainage policies and design procedures to include familiarity with VDOT's Drainage Manual.


  • Experience in peak discharge hydrology, hydraulic analysis, open channel flow and storm sewer systems.

  • Valid DEQ Dual Combined Administrator Certification, or ability to attain within One Year of Start Date.


Additional Considerations



  • Skill in coaching, counseling and training others in civil engineering principles, as well as effectively planning and scheduling work.


  • Experience in roadway drainage design and hydraulics and hydraulic analysis of bridges and other major drainage facilities using appropriate computer technology.
