Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District is seeking an Equipment Repair Technician to diagnose, repair, inspect and maintain motorized and mechanical equipment related to movable bridges, construction, highway maintenance, grounds, and automotive equipment of all types and in varied locations.
Core responsibilities for job & position:
Perform Repair Work: Perform repairs and maintain drainage pumps, gearboxes, couplers, piping systems, and related hydraulic equipment systems.
Preventive Maintenance: Perform preventive maintenance on drawbridge and tunnel machinery according to schedule and guidelines. Make repairs as needed when deficiencies are found or recommend outsourcing.
Diagnosis and Repair: Diagnose vehicle, equipment or asset failures using electronic testing equipment, service and equipment repair manuals and on-line resources. Recommend outsourcing for major repairs when needed.
Information Processing and Paperwork: Prepare, process, and maintain required maintenance and repair documentation. Generate, complete and close-out work orders in computer system. Perform time and leave entry. Prepare parts requests. Complete paperwork for warranty inspections and repairs. Process SPCC information in Cardinal. Maintain inventory stock location.
Emergency Operations: Prepare equipment for emergency operations. Make equipment repairs to reduce downtime during emergency operations.
Required skills for job & position:
• Ability to operate various types of light, medium and heavy-duty trucks, equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance on a variety of electrical or mechanical equipment.
• Knowledge of cutting, welding and fabrication operations.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of control circuits and troubleshooting controls for pumps, motors, and various other electrical or mechanical systems used in an industrial environment.
• Ability to read, write, and perform basic math calculations.
• Skilled in diagnosing and troubleshooting electrical and mechanical malfunctions.
• Knowledge of general shop procedures.
• Ability to read and comprehend service and repair manuals, gauges and testing devices.
• Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment.
• Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
• Ability to coach and instruct others in diagnostic and repair techniques and in the operation of equipment.
• Skill in the use of hand and power tools and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
• Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of electrical equipment, hydraulics, and National Electrical Code.
• Ability to read and comprehend service and equipment repair manuals, gauges, testing devices. blueprints, electrical or mechanical reports, schematics or diagrams.
VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position may be designated to support emergency operations during certain situations. As such, you may occasionally be required to work an assignment that includes hours outside the normal work schedule including weekends and holidays. Not all designated employees are provided an emergency operations assignment.

• Skill in the use of computers, hand and power tools, advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
• Knowledge of control circuits, troubleshooting controls for pumps, motors, and various other electrical or mechanical systems used in an industrial environment.
Additional Considerations
• ASE certifications
• Experience in industrial, mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical trade.
• Experience repairing and maintaining mechanical or electrical components of movable bridges and, or tunnel machinery.
• Commercial Driver' License (CDL).

References and verification of work history, DMV Records Check, pre-employment physical and drug screen, fingerprint-based criminal history records check. This position also requires approved safety shoes as a reimbursable expense. Applicants selected for interview will be required to perform a skills demonstration during interview process.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
Position is designated as essential and, as such, will be required to work outside normal hours, weekends, and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. Travel may be required.
VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
