VDOT’s Fredericksburg District has an exciting opportunity available in its Structure and Bridge Maintenance Department. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill a Bridge Maintenance Operator vacancy. This position repairs, maintains and replaces bridges and structures in accordance with established safety standards, VDOT specifications and procedures, and equipment operation standards.

Core responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
•Working as part of a crew performing replacement and other construction to include preventative and restorative structural maintenance activities on structures, bridges and large culverts in VDOT’s maintenance inventory
•Performing manual labor to include the formation of footers, abutments, and wing walls
•Placing and finishing concrete, erecting steel beam bridges, and installing timber, and concrete bridge decks
•Operating and use of light and medium-duty equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, etc. and various types of hand/power tools
•Conducting preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment/tools
•Performing work over, in, and around water from boats and scaffolding at various heights

VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations. Working during emergencies including incident management, snow removal, and hurricane preparedness. Performance of duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.

NOTE: This position requires approved safety shoes.


 


Minimum Qualifications


•Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures
•Ability to perform heavy manual labor
•Ability to read and to follow oral and written instructions
•Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
•Possess a valid driver’s license
•Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment
•Capability to conduct math calculations to measure and layout constructed elements on bridges and culverts

Minimum Qualifications shall also include one or more of the following skillsets;
•Skill in the operation of construction-related equipment.
•Skill in using hand and power tools.
•Skill in carpentry, concrete forming, and finishing
•Ability to perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment and tools.
•Skill in fabrication or welding steel components.


 


Additional Considerations


•Knowledge of highway/bridge maintenance methods and safety practices
•Experience in the maintenance and/or construction of roadways, bridges, facilities, or comparable large-scale construction projects
•Advanced experience in carpentry, fabrication, welding, building forms and false works, and concrete placement
•Advanced experience with light to medium-duty equipment and hand and power tools
•Valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements
•Related work zone and traffic control experience to include flagger certification
•Valid Certified Crane Operator with appropriate endorsements

Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

This position is designated as essential to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
